This summer Culina Group is introducing what it believes is a radically new concept in UK 3PL – TechHub.

Pushing the glass ceiling, blue sky thinking, Helicopter perspectives, Ideation, Innovation, Initiative, TechHub is here!

Creating and defining cutting edge Logistics innovations to establish Culina Group as the UK’s most technologically advanced 3PL.

This summer Culina Group is introducing what it believes is a radically new concept in UK 3PL – TechHub.

Techub – is to be a completely new department within the Culina Group organisation and will be based at Culina House the Groups head office in Warrington in the North West of England. The role of TechHub is to be unique within Culina Group and almost certainly within UK Logistics.

In the words of the great orators of the business community – TechHub will be focused on “pushing the glass ceiling” of possibilities, “blue sky thinking” without rules to brainstorm breakthrough alternatives to doing things the way they have always been done, and taking “helicopter perspectives” of operations, systemisation, and approaches to business to identify opportunities for improvements and transformations.

TechHub will focus on technical development and evolution of cutting edge new ideas, innovations, and initiatives.

The new department will help Culina Group to grow, expand, and further build its reputation as a progressive market leader in UK Logistics and a company that seeks to continually optimise its service partnerships with clients.

Culina Group has established a powerful reputation as a high quality operator that will always focus on doing the best they can for every client on every contract chilled or ambient, large or small, complex or routine, intricate or simple. TechHub will help take this focus a stage further and will be a centre of excellence for ideation, innovation and initiation:

  • Ideation – developing ideas and concepts, the sequence of thoughts, from original concept to implementation
  • Innovation – defining a change or update that dramatically improves efficiency, productivity, or outcome, not just a change but a “game changer”
  • Initiative – making the first steps to taking a new concept from vision into reality

TechHub will be a dedicated centre of innovation where Culina Group will trial tools, processes and technologies to support and enable growth to become the UK’s most technologically advanced 3PL.

“Matrix” Team is being established across the Culina Group business within which it will be everyone’s remit and responsibility to, innovate, and exploit new ideas, and to define exciting new concepts for the further evolution of Culina Group.

TechHub teams will meet with Culina Group business units to discuss ideas and how they can assist. There will be an on-going programme of incentives and rewards to maintain engagement and involvement.

The department will provide a dynamic and highly visible contribution to the evolution of Culina group. Development processes will be efficient and rapid. Trialing and implementation of agreed ideas will take place over a four to six week period to fully assess and prove/disprove any hypothesis.

The team will present rolling exhibits every few months to illustrate the contributions being made to the evolution of Culina Group and its businesses.

TechHub will be both physical and virtual, to bring creative and innovative people from across the business together. It will be a convenor and catalyst, providing space and support for innovation, business development and engagement within the technology space.

If you would like to submit your brilliant new idea, please email TechHub@CulinaGroup.com

Great Bear Markham Vale 2 raises £6,430.20 for North Derbyshire charity – Fairplay!

North Derbyshire charity, Fairplay, is the chosen charity of Great Bear Markham Vale 2.

Over recent months our Great Bear colleagues at this site have been holding charity bingo sessions to raise important funds for this established and valuable local charity.

In March Great Bear colleagues, Matt Dams and Olivia Smedley visited Fairplay at Chesterfield where they were able to meet many people who benefit from their important services and had a first-hand  opportunity to see the great work the charity does for North Derbyshire.

During the visit Matt and Olivia presented a cheque on behalf of their Great Bear Markham Vale 2 colleagues for £6,430.20 which Fairplay will be using to help their Educational schemes for young children.

Fairplay was set up in 1992 by a group of parents who wanted accessible activities for their disabled children. The group set up a club where their children could attend during school holidays. The demand for the group was overwhelming and the group developed into an organisation with paid staff. The organisation has grown ever since, developing youth services as well as children’s and expanding into areas throughout North Derbyshire.

In 2009 Fairplay was successful in receiving funding to build its first centre in Chesterfield. The centre has been purpose built to ensure that all children and young people are able to access the facilities on offer. The centre was officially opened in July 2010 and features an activity hall, outdoor play area, meeting rooms, library, sensory room, kitchen, and changing places toilet.

Fairplay now offers services to young people up to aged 25 as well as a new pre-school parent support group for parents with children under 5. Fairplay continues to grow and develop in response to the needs of local families and currently supports over 400 families across the area.

Stobart pledges further commitment to sustainability becoming the first Major UK Logistics Provider to set science-based targets to reduce carbon emissions.

Stobart has marked another milestone in its sustainability journey with an official commitment to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a global project that aims to provide business leaders with the accountability framework they need to reduce their carbon footprint.

SBTi is a collaboration between CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The initiative defines, promotes and showcases best practice on setting science-based targets to reduce emissions, and independently assesses and approves targets set by committed companies.

Stobart is the first Major UK Logistics provider in the UK to make the SBTi commitment. As a leading logistics provider, they have made this momentous pledge to set this milestone as part of their sustainability journey.

Stobart have created an initial roadmap for how they will achieve the SBTis and these plans will be approved by SBTi within the next year. They will continue to progress their initiatives and work towards the commitment to achieve the common goal of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This could mean 11 million fewer people exposed to extreme heat, 61 million fewer people exposed to drought, and 10 million fewer people exposed to the impacts of sea level rise.

This commitment forms part of the Stobart aim to be the most sustainable UK LSP”, said Stobart CEO, David Pickering, “we’re driving cultural change in our ways of working and are thoroughly committed to driving continuous improvement through sustainable initiatives that positively impact the environment.”

International Women’s Day – Celebrating the Women of Culina Group

It goes without saying, equality in the workplace is now more important than ever. The gap between men and women is closing in many aspects, which is very positive.

International Women’s Day taking place on 8th March 2020 is a global celebration of the achievements of women. It marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. Its mission is to – ‘Champion women of all backgrounds who dare to innovate, lead, and uplift others towards a more equal and inclusive workplace.’

Logistics is one such area where equality is improving significantly, particularly within Culina Group where equality is actively embraced. As our business expands there has been no better time for females to advance their career within the company.

Culina Group has enjoyed tremendous growth especially during recent years, and to see females reaching their potential in all aspects of what was once a seriously male dominated profession is fantastic.

To celebrate International Women’s Day at Culina Group we have spoken to many women throughout our business to get their thoughts on being involved in Logistics and being part of Culina Group.

Culina Group has women succeeding in roles across the business and this is something we celebrate!

So as we enter a new decade let us celebrate the achievements and progress that we have made and look forward to making in the coming years!

Tailor Made Logistics

Shopping for clothing can be tough! To find a stylish, high quality and truly unique item that fits you perfectly can be difficult. Usually you will tick two out of these three boxes, but most of the time a compromise is required in one area or another. Compromise is a problem when shopping ‘off the rack’, along with the fact that items are often mass-produced to appeal to a wide range of people. The reality is everyone is different, and everyone wants to feel special!

The Perfect Fit

I don’t know about you, but I feel great when I put on a nicely fitted suit. The perfect fitting suit will often require alterations but if bought ‘off the rack’ it will still not be unique. Being able to walk down the street knowing that you are wearing something unique to you is a special feeling, and the only way to achieve this is through a tailored service.

If you have the requirement for something truly unique to you, designed to the highest of standards and guaranteed to last a lifetime then you need someone who will take the time to understand your exact requirements in order to produce something bespoke.

Do your research; find what you believe to be the right tailor for you without rushing in. Any ‘tailor’ worth their salt will get to know you first in order to understand your requirements. Are you looking for something specialist for a particular event, or do you require something robust, and dependable for everyday use? Once established its time to choose the fabric(s) and the colour(s). You may have your own ideas of what you would like, however a good tailor will offer suggestions as to what they feel will best suit your needs (no pun intended).

Customisation

Layers should also be considered when deciding on what you need from your suit. Two or three piece? Single or double breasted? These are just the start of the questions that need to be answered when creating the perfect garment. Others include the number of pockets, lining and how many buttons and in what colour. Then comes the fine detail. What will be the colour of thread that will hold your garment of choice together for years to come? These are not decisions to be taken lightly.

On to the numbers! From head to toe, your measurements will be taken and the findings written down in great detail. Not only to be used in the making of the garment but to be referenced to for future alterations. Your unique measurements are then transferred to paper templates and cut to shape. The templates are then laid as closely as possibly on to your chosen cloth before cutting.

After many man hours for the tailor and a few fittings later, your unique, perfectly fitted and oh so comfortable suit is ready for you to show off to the world. To the average person your suit may look like any other but to those in the know your suit is a one of a kind piece of art. Every stitch and button carefully chosen by you and created by the tailor.

If you are willing to put in the time to find a tailor that is highly experienced with an eye for detail and who takes great pride in their work, it could be the start of a very rewarding relationship.

The Right Choice

Picking a tailor is comparable to choosing the right 3PL for your business. The last thing you want to do is ‘buy off the rack’ and end up settling for an inferior service. You want to find a logistics provider that will work with you to understand your business requirements. Whether it is short-term storage or you have a longer term plan requiring a robust service that will stand the test of time. You want a logistics provider to understand all of your ‘measurements’ and be able to translate them into a tailored service that ‘suits’ your needs.

Of course ‘alterations’ will be needed as time passes. We all fluctuate around the holidays but you want a logistics provider that can anticipate this and be ready to accommodate. Communication is key, whether speaking to your tailor or your logistics provider. The more you communicate the more the relationship will mature. Before you know it you will be walking down the street feeling confident that you have something that is unique to your business that no one else has.

At Culina Group we see ourselves as ‘Master Tailors’ of the logistics industry. We take the same amount of care and time with new clients to understand what their requirements are before we even talk ‘cloth’. Our ‘fabric’ offerings are extensive and varied. They are sourced from eight businesses within Culina Group that are all leaders in their respective fields. Our ‘fabrics’ complement each other beautifully in any ratio or pattern. We can offer chilled, ambient, frozen, fresh, baked goods, co-packing, food manufacturing, bonded services, warehousing and distribution. No matter what you choose, your 3PL ‘suit’ will be held together by our strong Added Value services ‘thread’. Designed not to break and to stand up to the toughest of challenges. We want you as a client to be as comfortable as possible knowing that we have created the right fit for your business.

Get in touch today to see how we can create a logistics ‘outfit’ that ‘suits’ you so well it will make your competitors jealous.
